“An unemployed man dies after a “Treatable” tooth infection”

September 6th 2011

A 24 year old father has died, after a tooth infection spread to his brain, because he had no health insurance and couldn’t afford treatment.

Kyle Willis, who is the nephew of famous bassist , Bootsy Collins , was truck down with a toothache a fortnight ago. The aspiring para-legal from Cincinnati was told he needed to have one of his wisdom teeth removed. But the single father was out of work and couldn’t afford the treatment.
This was a preventable tragedy; Kyle Willis was out of work and didn’t have health insurance. When the father on one began getting headaches and his face swelled up , he went to an emergency room, New York Daily news reported. Doctors told him he had a serious infection which was spreading to his brain.
Willis’ Aunt, Patti Collins told WLWT-TV , the doctors gave him prescriptions for antibiotics and pain medication, but he couldn’t afford to pay for the antibiotic, so he chose the pain medications, which is not what he needed. He should have gone to the dentist to take care of the toothache, and all this would not have escalated to all of this.
The pain lessened but the infection grew, spreading to his brain that caused his death.
Willis died, leaving a 6 year old daughter.
Dr. Irvin Silverstein of the University of California at San Diego to ABC News, “People don’t realize that dental disease can cause serious illness and people end up dying from one of the most preventable diseases in the world”
This Blog post is not intended to be any sort of indictment on anyone or the system, just as a caution to what Dental Heath can mean to your overall well-being.
